Intro: Erect perennial of dry forests, woodland margins and roadsides.

Stems: Stems thick, densely hairy; leaks milky sap when broken.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile, oblong-lance-shaped to oval, 1-5 in. long (reduced and fewer upward), mostly entire, lower surface paler than upper, hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in elongated (to 1 ft.) terminal panicle; heads 1/2-1 in. wide, consisting of 30-60 yellow ray florets with squared-off and toothed tips (no disk florets). Stalks and bracts surrounding the base of each head are covered with stalked glands.

Fruits: Fruit a fluffy cluster of cylindrical achenes with tufts of tawny hairs.
