Stems with 2 distinctive wings running between leaf nodes, often branched, smooth.
Leaves alternate, mostly sessile, lance-shaped, to 7 in. long, thin and hairy or smooth.
Flowers solitary in upper leaf axils of the slender branches; yellow; about 3/4 in. wide; consisting of 4 rounded, wavy-margined petals, 8 stamens, 4 triangular sepals visible between the petals and an elongated ovary that is square in cross-section.
Fruit a ribbed, reddish and hairy, narrowly cylindrical capsule with persistent sepals around the top end.
