Intro: Erect to ascending-arching perennial of turkey oak scrub and dry longleaf pinelands.
Stems: Stems solitary or a few together, unbranched.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, numerous, linear, 2-7 in. long (reduced upward), with dense tiny pits on both surfaces.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) densely arranged along a spike, often along only one side; heads about 1/3 in. wide, sessile, composed of 4-9 pink, 5-lobed disk florets surrounded by purple bristles and with 2 style branches protruding. Green or purple-tinged bracts with resin dots near their tips tightly cover the cone-shaped base of each head.
