not marked as a favorite taxon Pityopsis nervosa (Willdenow) Dress. Phenology: Jun-Oct. Habitat: Longleaf pine sandhills, dry woodlands and forests (such as ridgetop pine/heath communities in the Mountains), roadbanks. Distribution: S. New Jersey, Delaware (formerly), s. Ohio, and c. Arkansas south to s. Florida and nc. Texas; Bahamas; also in Mexico (Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tamaulipas, Veracruz) and Central America (Belize, Guatemala, Honduras). The only known specimen from West Virginia apparently stems from a garden collection in Monongalia County, far from any potential southern occurrences (J. Burkhart, pers. comm.; 2025).

Taxonomy Comments: This is the oldest species name for the most common large-headed member of the P. graminifolia complex, including a wide range of variation and possible introgression with other taxa of Pityopsis. Most populations are tetraploid (2n=36), but occasional diploids have also been referred here.
