Solidago rigida Linnaeus. Subgenus: Pleiactila. Section: Ptarmicoidei. Common name: Midwestern Bold Goldenrod. Phenology: Aug-Oct. Habitat: Glades, barrens, and prairie-like areas, over mafic or calcareous rocks. Distribution: RI and MA west to NY, s. ON, MI, WI, s. MN and c. NE, south to c. VA, sc. NC, w. NC, sc. TN, c. AR, and se. TX. East of MI, IN, IL, MO, and OK, Solidago rigida is generally rare and restricted to relictual prairie-like situations. Reports of S. rigida in the Coastal Plain of MS and AL are based on S. jacksonii.

Taxonomy Comments: This taxon is tetraploid (2n=36) through most of its range, with a few diploids reported for OK.

Intro: Erect perennial of glades, barrens, and prairie-like areas, over mafic (such as diabase) or calcareous (such as calcareous shale) rocks, and in adjacent disturbed areas, such as road banks and powerline rights-of-way.

Stems: Stems ridged or grooved, unbranched (except in inflorescence) and covered with coarse, stiff hairs.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, ascending, petiolate below and sessile above, oval to diamond-shaped, 3-8 in. long (reduced upward), with a prominent central vein, toothed or wavy-margined, densely hairy.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in a hairy, flat-topped, open-branching terminal array; heads to 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 6-13 yellow ray florets encircling a center disk of 14-35 yellow tubular florets. 3-4 series of tiny green bracts surround the bell-shaped base of each head.
