Intro: Erect to ascending-arching perennial from a basal rosette, found on rock outcrops and in dry rocky forests, usually over calcareous or mafic rocks.
Stems: Stem usually 1, typically covered with dense spreading hairs.
Leaves: Basal leaves present at flowering, petiolate and slightly winged, basically heart-shaped (though base may be barely notched), 1 1/2-4 1/2 in. long, coarsely sharp-toothed, spreading-hairy above and sparsely so beneath; stem leaves alternate, short-petiolate to sessile, oval to lance-shaped and reduced upward.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) clustered along arching branches of a terminal array, primarily along 1 side of each branch; heads 1/4 in. or less long, consisting of 3-6 yellow ray florets (may have 2-3 teeth at the tip) encircling a center disk of 3-6 tiny, yellow tubular florets. 2-3 series of tiny, unequally, oval bracts surround the narrowly bell-shaped base of each head.
