Symphyotrichum drummondii (Lindley) Nesom. Common name: Hairy Heart-leaved Aster. Phenology: Aug-Oct. Habitat: Mesic to dry forests, especially over calcareous soils Distribution: PA, OH, MI, WI, MN, and NE, south to MD, WV, TN, AL, MS, and LA (including the Florida Parishes).
ID notes: S. drummondii is quite similar to the S. cordifolium complex; many reports of S. cordifolium further southwest represent misidentifications of S. drummondii. Where sympatric, S. drummondii, in addition to the stem pubescence and often elongate phyllary green zones, tends to have thicker-textured leaves with shorter, more broadly winged petioles.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
