A genus of about 250 species, herbs, tropical and temperate (Plunkett et al. 2018).

Glossary (beta!)

Subfamily: Saniculoideae. Tribe: Saniculeae.

ID notes: Plants are creeping to erect and usually glabrous. Leaves are simple and entire to pinnately or palmately lobed to divided and often spinose. Inflorescences are conspicuously head-like, globose to cylindrical, sometimes with a coma of bracts from the apex of the heads. The flowers are white, blue, purple, or greenish and the fruits variously covered with scales or tubercles.
