*Hosta Trattinnick. Common name: Hosta, Plantain-lily.
A genus of about 25-40 herbs, of temperate Asia, widely cultivated (since at least the 8th century), and with numerous cultivars. Hosta undulata (Otto & A.Dietrich) L.H.Bailey, once considered a distinct species, is now generally regarded as a cultivar rather than a species, based on an understanding that it is a hybrid of garden origin rather than a naturally occurring species. This cultivar can be recognized by its showy white variegated leaves (Schmid 1991).
ID notes: Shade-loving plants with lush foliage varying in color from deep green to blue, and often striking variegation. Plants are rhizomatous and form clumps, with delicate flowers that rise above the foliage on slender panicles.
