Marshallia Schreber. Common name: Marshallia, Barbara's-buttons.
A genus of about 11-13 species, perennial herbs, of the se. United States. Marshallia ranges from sc. VA, sw. PA, WV, s. KY, s. MO, and c. OK, south to c. peninsular FL, and wc. TX.
ID notes: The heads are discoid but uniquely so: the corolla lobes linear to linear-oblong and often twisted and somewhat appressed, arising from long funnelform disc tubes conspicuously protruding beyond the pales of the receptacle. Still, these differ than species with only ligulate florets, which have corolla lobes flattened or strap-like.
