Nuphar J.E. Smith. Spatterdock, Yellow Pondlily.
A genus of about 16 species, aquatic herbs, of north temperate areas. Beal (1956) recognized 8 taxa of Nuphar in North America, which he treated as subspecies of the European N. lutea. Voss's (1985) statement (about the genus in Michigan) "our plants are quite easily distinguished ... and they are treated here as closely related species" applies equally (or better!) in our area. Recent treatments (see references) recognize multiple species.
Other Comments: Key based in large part on FNA and Padgett (2007).
