Intro: Erect perennial of moist to somewhat moist forests.

Stems: Stems branching in inflorescence, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves basal and alternate on the stem, petiolate (uppermost leaves with short, flaring petioles), palmately divided into 3 or 5 leaflets, the segments lance-elliptic with toothed margins and smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in compound umbels at ends of branching stems, each umbellet on a grooved stalk and bristly and pom-pom-like with 3 perfect flowers and 5-6 male (staminate) flowers on short, thick stalks. Flowers white to greenish, tiny, consisting of 5 petals, 5 sepals, 5 protruding stamens and a bristly ovary with a pair of long styles.

Fruits: Fruit an oval, burlike, cluster of 2 bristly seeds.
