Yucca carrii Clary & T.P. Adams. Common name: Carr's Yucca. Phenology: May-Jun. Habitat: Coastal prairies, sometimes brackish, mima mound edges, chenier plain woodlands. Distribution: Coastal areas of se. TX (Brazoria, Chambers, Galveston, Harris, Matagorda counties).
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: See Clary & Adams (2021) for details.
Other Comments: No fruits have been found in any known populations. Yucca louisianensis, also dry-fruited, often grows in sympatry with Y. carrii but no capsules have been observed in either species along the TX coast. The lack of fruits for both species area-wide suggests that the sole pollinator, the yucca moths, may be extirpated in these areas. To date, no yucca moth records for the north Texas Gulf Coast have been found within entomological databases (Clary & Adams 2021). The lack of viable seed set is an increasingly common occurrence for many Yucca populations, especially for Yucca freemanii (E. Keith, pers. obs.).
