Chelone obliqua Linnaeus var. erwiniae Pennell & Wherry. Mountain Purple Turtlehead, Erwin’s Turtlehead. Phen: Jul-Oct; Sep-Nov. Hab: Bogs, streambanks, swamp forests. Dist: Southern Blue Ridge from w. VA south to sw. NC, e. TN, nw. SC, and ne. GA (mapping somewhat provisional).
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Var. erwiniae is tetraploid; the other varieties are hexaploid (Nelson, Elisens, & Benish 1998). This taxon is likely to be elevated to species rank (A. Nelson, pers. comm., 2023).
