Crataegus ravenelii Sargent. Ravenel’s Hawthorn. Phen: Apr; Aug-Sep. Hab: Longleaf pine sandhills, upland pine and pine-oak forests, rocky woodlands, xeric or subxeric habitats with sandy or well-drained clay soils. Dist: Se. NC s. to n. FL, w. to central AL.

ID notes:Often reaching treelike proportions (4-8 m tall, trunk 10-30 cm diameter); leaves often serrate-dentate, densely pubescent when young, becoming glabrate; inflorescences tomentose.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Similar to C. alabamensis Beadle, which is of a more restricted range. Suspected intermediates of C. ravenelii with other members of the Lacrimatae series are Crataegus rimosa Beadle, Crataegus laxa Beadle, Crataegus meridiana Beadle, Crataegus cuthbertii Ashe, and Crataegus condigna Beadle, the latter being a prioritized name in FNA9.
