Crataegus holmesiana Ashe. Common name: Holmes’s Hawthorn. Phenology: May; Sep-Oct. Habitat: Woodland borders, pastures, brushy fencerows. Distribution: Reported for WV; sporadic from ME to MN, s. to PA, IL.

ID notes: The often-elliptical fruit is a key diagnostic trait.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: Allied to C. coccinea L. and C. pennsylvanica Ashe and possibly of hybrid origin.
