Prosartes lanuginosa (Michaux) D. Don. Common name: Yellow Mandarin, Yellow Fairybells. Phenology: Apr-May; Aug-Sep. Habitat: Deciduous forests, especially coves. Distribution: Primarily an Appalachian species: NY and s. ON south to n. GA (Jones & Coile 1988) and AL; disjunct in the Interior Highlands of AR.

Origin/Endemic status: Native

Synonymy : = Ar, Can, FNA26, K4, NS, NY, POWO, Tn, Va, Shinwari et al (1994); = Disporum lanuginosum (Michx.) G.Nicholson — C, F, G, Pa, RAB, S, S13, W, WV, Johnson (1968). Basionym: Streptopus lanuginosus Michx. 1803

Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile, oval to lance-shaped, 2-6 in. long, with prominent parallel veins, sparsely hairy on midrib and veins.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers dangle in small clusters from leaf axils; pale-yellow to greenish-yellow; 1-2 in. wide; bell-shaped and consisting of 6 pointed tepals, 6 dangling stamens with yellow anthers and a long style.

Fruits: Fruit a smooth, bright orange to red, oval berry.
