Cypripedium parviflorum Salisbury var. parviflorum. Common name: Small Yellow Lady's-slipper. Phenology: Apr-Jun; Jul-Aug. Habitat: Mesic forests, seepy forests over amphibolite, other habitats. Distribution: VT, NY, OH, IN, IL, MO and KS, south to NC, GA (?), AL (AL), AR, and OK.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: The exact range, abundance, and habitats of this variety in our area are obscure, because of confusion with the more northern var. makasin (Farwell) Sheviak and small-flowered forms of var. pubescens. See Sheviak (1994) for a discussion of why North American plants of yellow lady's-slippers are recognized as a species distinct from the European C. calceolus Linnaeus.
