Malaxis bayardii Fernald. Common name: Appalachian Adder's-mouth. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Dry, open, upland forests, shale barrens. Distribution: S. New York and se. Massachusetts south through Connecticut, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to w. and c. North Carolina, mostly in the mountains (but somewhat disjunct on the Coastal Plain of Virginia).
