Platanthera blephariglottis (Willdenow) Lindley. Subgenus: Blephariglottis. Section: Blephariglottis. Common name: Small White Fringed Orchid. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Seepages, sandhill-pocosin ecotones. Distribution: NL (Newfoundland) west to MI and IL, south to GA.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: Following Brown (2006b), it seems best to recognize the two white-fringed orchids as separate species; they are morphologically distinctive, and where they co-occur their blooming times are offset. Hartvig et al. (2022) argued that spur length difference is geographically clinal, associated with different pollinators, and that the variation should be regarded as taxonomically meaningless
