Intro: Erect perennial found in fields, meadows, pastures and woodlands.

Stems: Stems unbranched, smooth but may be sparsely hairy above.

Leaves: Leaves (2-4) basal, oval, smooth, usually withered by bloom time.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers 10-35 in a narrow, tightly spiraled spike; white; 1/4 in. or less long; bilaterally symmetric; tubular, with a total of 5 petals and petal-like sepals, the lowest of which forms a downcurved lip with crinkled edges and has a green patch in its center.

Fruits: Fruit a tiny, ellipsoid capsule.
