Dalea

Dalea floridana (Rydberg) J.T. Diggs & Weakley. Common name: Florida Prairie-clover. Phenology: Jan-Dec. Habitat: Marl prairie, pine rocklands, rockland hammock edges, coastal strands. Distribution: Endemic to s. FL.

Glossary (beta)

Subgenus: Parosela. Section: Parosela.

ID notes: Flowers pale yellow, "fading" to red.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: As discussed in Diggs & Weakley (2017), this taxon is best given species rank. Barneby (1977) treats D. carthagenensis as a "polymorphic species of immense, discontinuous dispersal" distributed from s. FL and Mexico south through the West Indies, and Central America to c. South America. Given the morphological differences and allopatric distributions of var. floridana and many of the other varieties, it seems more likely that they represent modern biological / evolutionary species.
