Iris verna Linnaeus var. smalliana Fernald ex M.E. Edwards. clade: Gattenhofia. Upland Dwarf Iris. Phen: Mar-May; Jun-early Aug. Hab: Dry to somewhat moist, rocky or sandy woodlands and forests. Dist: Sc. PA and WV south to w. NC, e. TN, n. GA, se. GA, Panhandle FL, and AL; disjunct in Ouachita Mountains of AR.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: See Fernald (1947) and Small (1931) for discussion of these two taxa, treated as varieties but warranting species rank.
