Muhlenbergia paniculata (Nuttall) Columbus. Common name: Tumble Grass. Phenology: Apr-Oct. Habitat: Dry prairies, salt licks, roadsides. Distribution: MB west to BC, south to w. LA, TX, NM, AZ, and (?) Mexico.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Other Comments: Primarily a species of midwestern prairies and central plains, M. paniculata reaches its furthest eastern extent in Saline County, IL, where it is still apparently extant (P. Marcum, pers. comm.). It is apparently often conspicuous in film scenes occurring within deserted towns of the American west (Snow 2003b).
