Dichanthelium freckmannii LeBlond. Common name: Sandy Run Witchgrass. Phenology: Apr-Dec. Habitat: Wet savannas underlain by shallow coquina limestone in the outer Coastal Plain. Associates include Rhynchospora thornei, Carex lutea, Coreopsis aristulata, Thalictrum cooleyi and Allium species 1. Distribution: Currently known only from the discovery site in Onslow Co., NC.
ID notes: Plants show some intermediacy between Dichanthelium scabriusculum and D. scoparium, both of which occur at the site, which suggests a possibility of a hybrid basis. However, the spikelets of the new entity are shorter than those of either of the putative parents.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: Treated as Dichanthelium species 16 in previous editions of the Flora.
