Anatherum virginicum Sprengel var. 1. Common name: Smooth Bluestem. Habitat: Longleaf pine savannas. Distribution: NC south to peninsular FL, west to e. LA. Known from NC and SC (Berkeley and Marion counties; P. McMillan, pers. comm.).
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: This entity has glaucous stem internodes and glabrous leaves. Although treated by Campbell (1983) as the informal ‘smooth variant’, decades of additional observations of this taxon by Southeastern Coastal Plain field botanists suggest that it warrants formal taxonomic recognition.
