TN south to w. SC, nc. GA, and ne. AL; disjunct in s. OH, w. WV, and ne. KY.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, on petioles with a pair of stipules at the base, diamond-shaped to triangular or oval, sometimes divided into 3 lance-shaped segments, with widely spaced teeth.

Flowers: Flowers on ascending stalks from leaf axils, bright yellow, to 3/4 in. wide, bilaterally symmetric, with 5 unequal petals; the 3 lowest petals have purplish-brown veins and the 2 lateral ones are bearded at the base.
Fruits: Fruit an elliptical capsule.
Comments: Closed, self-pollinating flowers are present in this Viola species.
Height: 5-15 in.
