A genus of about 14 species, annual (less typically perennial) herbs, of TX south through tropical America.

Glossary (beta!)

ID notes: Tinantia resembles the more common and widespread Commelina in having bilateral flowers, with 2 large petals (lavender blue) and 1 smaller petal (white). The flowers emerge from an open spathe (similar to the leaves, but with a cordate base). Only Commelina is similar in these features; it differs in having a folded spathe, 3 rather then 6 fertile stamens, and the filaments being glabrous rather than bearded with hairs.
