Pinus clausa (Chapman ex Engelmann) Vasey ex Sargent. Subgenus: Pinus. Section: Trifoliae. Subsection: Contortae. Common name: Sand Pine. Habitat: Florida scrub, and dry sands where planted outside of its native range, for instance widely planted in pulp plantations in FL and s. GA, experimentally planted as far north as NC (and persisting and naturalizing). Distribution: FL Panhandle, S. AL, south to s. FL; planted and naturalized further north in GA, SC, and NC Coastal Plain and further west in s. MS.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: P. clausa is closely related to P. virginiana, the n. North American P. banksiana, and the nw. North American P. contorta complex.

Other Comments: This species is adapted to stand-replacement fires, recruiting soon after fire, growing rapidly and reproducing at a young age. Fire return intervals for sand pine and rosemary scrub can vary from 10-100 years (Menges et al. 2006); thus creating high fuel loads and intense fires in long unburned scrubs.
