*Gossypium barbadense Linnaeus. Sea-island Cotton, Egyptian Cotton, Pima Cotton, Extra-long-staple Cotton. Hab: Historically cultivated, presumably no longer present in our area. Dist: Native of South America, Central America, and the West Indies.

Origin/Endemic status: South America

Other Comments: Probably first domesticated about 5000-5500 years b.p. in coastal Peru and Ecuador. For a book length account of Sea Island cotton, see Porcher & Fick (2005).
