Distribution: PA west to OH, IN, and MO, south to w. NC, nw. GA (Jones & Coile 1988), nw. AL, and ne. MS.

Horticultural Information
Intro: Herbaceous perennial vine of moist to dry forests, woodlands, barrens and thickets over calcareous rocks.
Stems: Stems climbing over other vegetation, hairy, leaking milky sap when broken.
Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, widely heart-shaped with an abruptly tapered tip, 1 1/2-6 in. long.
Inforescence:
Flowers: Flowers in clusters of 10-50, on stalks from between leaf petiole pairs; buds long-conical; flowers rose to light maroon (rarely dark maroon, green or cream-colored), consisting of 5 ascending-spreading, narrow, pointed petals connected at the base, and a central "crown" containing the reproductive structures.
Fruits: Fruit a warty, oval to lance-shaped follicle.
