Andersonglossum virginianum (Linnaeus) J.I. Cohen. Common name: Southern Hound’s-tongue, Southern Wild Comfrey. Phenology: Apr-Jun. Habitat: Moist deciduous forests. Distribution: CT west to OK, south to FL and LA.

Intro: Erect perennial of moist deciduous forests.

Stems: Stems stout, unbranched, with few leaves and covered in bristly hairs.

Leaves: Leaves mostly basal, petiolate, oval to elliptic, to 10 in. long, stiff-hairy; the few stem leaves are alternate, sessile and clasping and smaller.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in 1-4 coiled racemes branching off at the top of the stem, these lengthening and straightening as flowers open and fruit matures. Flowers pale blue or white, about 3/4 in. wide, consisting of a short corolla tube that opens to 5 overlapping lobes and a shorter, hairy, 5-parted calyx.

Fruits: Fruit a cluster of 4 bristly nutlets.
