Taxonomy Comments: Muñoz-Rodríguez et al. (2022) discuss the origin of Ipomoea batatas as a hexaploid allopolyploid derivative derived from the ancestors of autotetraploid Ipomoea aequatoriensis T. Wells & P. Muñoz (currently an Andean endemic) and diploid Ipomoea trifida (a widespread circum-Caribbean species).
