Intro: Erect perennial found in rocky woodlands, open woods, barrens, clearings and road banks.

Stems: Stems unbranched, smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, elliptic to narrowly lance-shaped, to 6 in. long, gland-dotted, smooth or slightly hairy.

Inforescence: Composite flowers (heads) arranged about 1/2 in. apart along a slightly zig-zagging terminal spike; heads about 1 in. tall, sessile or stalked, composed of 7-12 pink, 5-lobed disk florets with 2 protruding style branches. Gland-dotted bracts with thickened tips and translucent margins tightly surround the cylindric to bell-shaped base of each head.

Fruits: Fruit a cluster of tufted achenes.
