Calycanthus Linnaeus. Subfamily: Calycanthoideae. Sweet-shrub.
A genus of 2-4 species, 1 (or possibly 2) of e. North America, 1 of w. North America, and 1 of China (the latter sometimes segregated as a separate genus, Sinocalycanthus).
ID notes:Calycanthus is distinctive in sterile condition by the flanged expansion of the twigs at nodes, the distinctive odor of the leaves and bark, and the opposite leaf arrangement, with the two leaves of the pair subtly asymmetrical and oblique, as a mirrored pair.
