Polygala boykinii Nuttall var. sparsifolia Wheelock. Boykin's Milkwort. Hab: Pine rocklands, often growing out of oolitic limestone. Dist: S. FL (Monroe County Keys, Miami-Dade County).

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Further research is needed to confirm the northern limit on this variety. Small described Polygala praetervisa as restricted to the lower Florida Keys while Wheelock originally described the taxon from south FL (Cudjoe Key) growing in coral soil. Some specimens annotated as this taxon from Everglades National Park (O. Lakela 26756, USF) appear slightly more intermediate with P. boykinii var. boykinii. Small also described material resembling P. boykinii from Everglades as Polygala flagellaris, which aligns with this intermediate material. While material from the lower keys clearly shows significantly reduced leaf size, stems with overall fewer leaves, and whorled leaves mostly limited to the basal portion of stems (or absent), more work is needed to place this intermediate material in Miami-Dade county.

Synonymy: Polygala boykinii Nutt. var. sparsifolia Wheelock; = K1, K3, K4; < Polygala boykinii Nutt. – Fl3, FNA10, WH3; > Polygala flagellaris Small – S; > Polygala praetervisa Chodat – S
