Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: The epithet "filifolia" (used in various combinations at genus and variety level and in various genera) was determined by Terrell (1986) to apply to typic Houstonia nigricans, a judgment now fixed by designation of a lectotype.

Synonymy: = Hedyotis nigricans (Lam.) Fosberg var. filifolia (Chapm.) Shinners – Bah, basionym ambiguous; = Hedyotis nigricans (Lam.) Fosberg var. floridana (Standl.) Wunderlin – Terrell (1986), Terrell (1991), Turner (1995b); = Houstonia filifolia (Chapm.) Small – S, basionym ambiguous; = Stenaria nigricans (Lam.) Terrell var. floridana (Standl.) Terrell – Fl5, K3, K4, WH3, Terrell (2001)
