Hab: Bogs, seepages over mafic rocks, grassy balds (as Whitetop Mountain). Dist: NH, VT, NY, s. ON, MI and WI south to w. VA, w. NC, nc. GA, c. TN, w. TN, and se. MO. Coastal Plain records (except northwards, in DE, NJ, and NY) represent misidentifications of S. salicina.
ID notes:The broad basal leaves, saturated wetland habitat, and finely but definitely scabrous upper leaf surface are distinctive.
