Stems: Stems ascending to sprawling, relying on tendrils to cling to adjacent vegetation for support; flattened and narrowly winged; often branched from the base; smooth.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, on flattened petioles with lobed stipules at base, divided into 2 lance-linear to oblong leaflets to 3 1/2 in. long with a branching tendril between, smooth.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers 1-3 in small racemes on stalks arising from leaf axils; purplish-pink and white; to 1/2 in. long; with typical pea-flower shape, the upper "banner" petal usually darker pink.

Fruits: Fruit a stiff-hairy, green (turning brown), flattened pod.
