Cuphea viscosissima Jacquin. Common name: Clammy Cuphea, Blue Waxweed. Phenology: Jul-Oct. Habitat: Dry or wet places, especially over mafic or calcareous rocks. Distribution: NH west to IA and KS, south to c. GA, LA, and e. OK.

Stems: Stems branched, with a purple cast and covered with sticky hairs.

Leaves: Leaves opposite, petiolate, lance-shaped to oval, 3/4-2 in. long, covered with sticky hairs.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers solitary or paired in upper leaf axils, purple-red, to 1 1/2 in. long, bilaterally symmetric, consisting of 6 spreading purple petals of unequal size (2 long, 4 short), a sticky tubular calyx and 12 stamens.

Fruits: Fruit an oval capsule opening along one side.
