Intro: Erect or spreading perennial of fields, roadsides, pastures and other open, disturbed areas. Native of Europe.

Stems: Stems weak, 4-angled, branched or unbranched, smooth (sometimes rough on prominent angles).

Leaves: Leaves opposite, sessile, linear to narrowly lance-shaped and broadest at the base, 1/2-2 in. long.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers arranged in open forking branches on upper stems; white; 1/8-1/2 in. wide; consisting of 5 deeply cleft petals, sepals as long as or shorter than the petals and bearing 3 distinct veins, and 10 stamens.

Fruits: Fruit a narrowly oval capsule.
