Sarracenia psittacina Michaux. Parrot Pitcherplant. Phen: Late Mar-May. Hab: Savannas, less commonly on floating peat mats. Dist: This distinctive species is distributed primarily in the East Gulf Coastal Plain, but ranges east to the Atlantic Coastal Plain of e. GA (Bullock County), in close proximity to the SC border.

Origin/Endemic status: Endemic

Taxonomy Comments: Var. okefenokeensis may have merit, but needs additional study.

Intro: Carnivorous perennial of wet pine savannas; less commonly found on floating peat mats.

Stems: Stems underground, sending up several pitchers and a single flower stalk per plant.

Leaves: Leaves are narrow, green and red pitchers (tubes that trap insects), 3-12 in. long, with many white patches; they usually lie on the ground in a rosette and each has a broad, curved wing on the upper side and a rounded hood (the "parrot head" referenced in common name) nearly closing the opening.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flower solitary, nodding from the top of an erect stalk taller than the pitchers; maroon; consisting of 5 drooping oblong petals (1-2 in. long), 5 strongly curved triangular sepals and an umbrella-like structure in the center.
