Origin/Endemic status: Native

Taxonomy Comments: The other variety, var. bolanderi (Hegelmann) Fassett, with larger fruits, co-occurs with var. heterophylla in nw. North America and is of uncertain taxonomic status, having been treated as species, subspecies, variety, and lumped.
