Intro: Erect perennial of dry woodlands, dry to mesic sandhills and roadsides.
Stems: Stems slightly woody, branched above, hairy.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, mostly sessile, oval, rough-hairy and slightly sticky-resinous; many leaves are twisted at the base, resulting in an orientation perpendicular to the ground.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) in a flat-topped, branching terminal cluster; heads about 1/2 in. wide, consisting of 2-5 white ray florets encircling a center disk of 6-11 tiny, dull white, tubular florets. Several series of tiny, green-tipped whitish bracts enclose the cylindric base of each head.
