Intro: Erect, rhizomatous perennial of pocosins, swamp forests, wet savannas, wet pine flatwoods, maritime forests; often forms dense patches via stolons and rhizomes.
Stems: Stems branched in inflorescence, mostly smooth below but densely furry above.
Leaves: Leaves alternate, sessile with somewhat clasping bases, crowded and ascending, narrowly elliptic, to 4 in. long, entire to vaguely toothed, rough-hairy above and hairy beneath.

Flowers: Composite flowers (heads) on one side of the arching branches of a dense terminal panicle; heads about 1/4 in. long, consisting of 5-9 yellow ray florets encircling a center disk of yellow tubular florets. 4-5 unequal series of tiny green bracts surround the narrowly bell-shaped base of each head.
