Anemone Linnaeus. Subfamily: Ranunculoideae. Tribe: Anemoneae. Common name: Anemone.
A genus of about 140-200 species (depending on circumscription), perennial herbs (rarely shrubs), of Eurasia, North America, Central America, South America, and Africa. See Anemonidium and Hepatica for other taxa sometimes treated in Anemone. Mosyakin & de Lange (2018) provide a succinct discussion of the need to split Anemone and the approach here taken, following them and Mosyakin (2016, 2018). The infrageneric classification for Anemone s.s. shown in the key is that of Hoot, Meyer, & Manning (2012); all our members are in their section Anemone, but differ in subsection and series.
