Mimosa biuncifera Bentham. Common name: Catclaw Mimosa, Wait-a-bit. Phenology: Apr-Aug; Sep-Dec. Habitat: Calcareous, gravelly, or rocky open areas, often on alluvial soils. Distribution: C. Texas, Panhandle Texas, n, New Mexico, and n. Arizona south into Mexico.
Origin/Endemic status: Native
Taxonomy Comments: This species has long been included as a variety of M. aculeaticarpa (e.g., Isely 1998; Diggs et al. 1999; Turner et al. 2003; Kartesz 2022), but we are following Grether (2023) who chose to treat it as a species. Isely (1998) discussed variation in pinnae number in this species and mapped populations where pinnae were predominantly 1-3 pairs per leaf versus other populations where pinnae were 4-8 pairs; most populations within our region in TX have 1-3 pairs.
