Eryngium ravenellii A. Gray. Common name: Ravenel's Eryngo. Phenology: Jul-Sep. Habitat: Wet pine savannas, mostly or entirely over calcareous substrates. Distribution: Se. South Carolina (Berkeley and Charleston counties) south to sw. Georgia and n. Florida. Reports for se. North Carolina are based on inland populations of E. aquaticum.
Origin/Endemic status: Endemic
Taxonomy Comments: McMillan's (2003) suggestion that E. ravenelii warrants specific status distinct from E. aquaticum is here accepted. Re the spelling of the epithet, IPNI (2-25) states "Gray cited the type collector’s name as Ravenel; he seemed to have implicitly Latinized the honoree’s name as Ravenellius and coined the epithet as ravenellii (not correctable to “ravenelii”)."
