Polygonatum biflorum (Walter) Elliott var. commutatum (Schultes f.) Morong. Common name: Large Solomon's-seal, King Solomon's-seal. Phenology: May-Jun; Sep-Oct. Habitat: Moist forests, roadbanks. Distribution: NH west to s. MB, south to SC, GA, MS, LA, and TX.

Taxonomy Comments: There has been a wide divergence of opinion regarding the merits (and practicality) of distinguishing this taxon from typical P. biflorum, and the characters considered most reliable; the two taxa may differ in chromosome number and geographical distribution; they are not, however, always readily distinguished morphologically. I prefer to recognize this taxon as a variety. See references for additional discussion.

plant sale text: King Solomon's-seal is a choice southeastern native perennial. Its pairs of greenish-white bell-shaped pendant flowers are very attractive when the plant is in bloom. Deep blue berries follow the flowers. Plant this species in moist, well-drained humusy soil to keep the foliage looking its best through the growing season. This variety will grow to a wider span than original plant.
