Intro: Erect, clumped annual/biennial of dry woodlands, sandy roadsides and sandhills.

Stems: Stems multiple from crown, sometimes sprawling, covered with long silvery-white hairs.

Leaves: Leaves alternate, clustered at base of stem and overwintering, petiolate, elliptic to oblong, 2 1/2-6 in. long, covered with long silvery-white hairs.

Inforescence:

Flowers: Flowers in crowded, erect terminal spikes, 4-12 in. long; pink or lavender; about 1/2 in. long with typical pea-flower shape, including a "banner" petal that bears a large, maroon patch.

Fruits: Fruit an elongated, flattened pod also densely covered with silvery-white hairs.
